Video editing software wanted

One of our ESO partners wants to help us hear and see what God is doing through that ministry. To do so he needs Vista compatible video editing software. Particularly important is the ability to produce subtitles or to lay down a new audio track. The people he is interviewing don't all speak English and he wants to be able to provide a translation. A senior editor at Christianity Today International, he has served as executive producer of the documentary films Where Faith and Culture Meet and Round Trip and was editorial director of the Christian Vision Project from 2005 to 2008.

PLAYING GOD: CHRISTIAN REFLECTIONS ON THE USE AND MISUSE OF POWER—
Power is the inescapable counterpart of cultural creativity. Creating culture requires power; and creating culture often leads to power. Yet our ability to converse honestly and fruitfully as Christians about power is often limited. We employ inadequate synonyms like "authority," "influence," and "leadership." Or we follow much of the secular world in reducing all power to domination, seeing it as always and everywhere corrupted and corrupting. Perhaps most often, we simply avoid talking about power at all, even going so far as to pretend that power is not a reality in our communities ("We are all servant leaders here"). Our unspoken attitude toward power may be much like Christendom's attitude toward sex for the better part of a thousand years: it is best not to speak of it, if one has it one should only have the minimum amount necessary, and the holiest people have none of it.

Where can an honest account of power begin? In Genesis 1–3, where creative power is clearly present and where we also begin to discern the roots of corrupted power. I will suggest that "playing God" is both at the heart of the human corruption of power, taking the forms of the fraternal twins of idolatry and injustice, and at the heart of a hopeful, biblical reclaiming of power as creativity and freedom. In the end I hope to begin a new and better conversation about power that sets many more of the Creator's image-bearers free to be the cultivators and creators they are meant to be.

Tenth Artifact

The staff spent yesterday cleaning out offices and closets. We came across a very interesting artifact and are still trying to figure out what it is. It has a keyboard attached to it and there is a roller on top. But when we turned it on nothing happened. There is no monitor and we can't find a place to insert disk. Baffling!

David Skeel on PBS

Sunday I walked up to the New Members class and observed Ruling Elder David Skeel for awhile teaching on the mysterious subject of the sacraments. Yesterday, he was interviewed by PBS' Newshour on the mysterious subject of derivatives finance law. I'll have to ask which he found more challenging.

(On a side note, besides knowing David Skeel personally, I have the added distinction of growing up with the Senior News Director for the Newshour show, Russ Clarkson. Our high school was provided TV production equipment which is what spurred him on to his career. He was the producer and I was the cameraman.)

LGTripp Gallery is pleased to announce two solo exhibitions of new works by Paul Fabozzi and Seonglan Kim Boyce. The artists share an underlying partiality for geometry, which results in each computing a unique approach to their distinct visual equations. This is the third solo exhibition for Fabozzi and the second solo for Boyce in Philadelphia, presented by gallery director Luella Tripp.

PAUL FABOZZI’S art was inspired by collecting data on his walks through New York City. Counting steps, measuring distance, often using a pedometer and a camera, the artist documented his walks. This became the material, the data that would inform his paintings and drawings. Lines and sets of shapes were the language the artist employed to capture his experience. In this new series, Spectral Variants, Fabozzi transitions from a calculative process to re-experiencing the process by reconfiguring and recalculating the information. The artist states, “I feel that this process is bringing me both closer to and farther away from the original walk—farther from the objective qualities of the walk perhaps, but closer to the energy of that experience”.

SEONGLAN KIM BOYCE’S retrospective in 2007 presented work spanning twenty years. Nature, its physical wonders and beauty, rhythm, power and spirit is her inspiration. Her paintings are visual expressions of the silent harmony and balance of life. The artist employs geometric elements to best express this uniformity. Obsessive attention is given to color, length and thickness of lines and spatial relationships are brought to the surface to minimize depth. Seonglan’s recent work is intuitive and without specific reference. She states, “In my painted space I’m interested in even surface, balance, immediacy, distinct colors, open space and a silent motion is at play.”

Children and Tenth

Pat Canavan will present his perspective on children’s education at Tenth this Sunday at the April 25 Training Children for Worship class held at the Warwick. He will focus specifically on Tenth’s memory work program and the Bible School curriculum. In addition, he will give an overview of the entire children’s program at Tenth. This is an ideal class for Tenth parents to attend.

Raemma Luck

Pastoral Selection Committee Info

This coming Sunday we will hold a called meeting of the congregation to "to approve the motion from the Session to erect a Pastoral Selection Committee and to dissolve pastoral relations with Dr. Philip G. Ryken."

Dr. Ryken's Comments on the Capital Campaign

“Do not be anxious about anything,” the Scripture says, “but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God” (Phil. 4:6).

Anne Davies Leaving

Anne Davies  is stepping down from her position as City Outreach Coordinator, effective May 5. Her last duties will be directing Tenth's responsibilities for PCRT. She will then leave for New York for awhile and consider the Lord's next calling for her. She will be greatly missed. Besides her duties as coordinator, Anne has been the "party" person on staff. Whenever we needed a party (or even without a good excuse for a party), Anne was the leader, which now provides us with a dilemma. How do we put on a party for the person we turned to to put on parties?

Outreach luncheon canceled

Due to the congregational meeting, "Around the World in 80 Minutes" will not meet on Sunday, April 25.

The next outreach luncheon will be held on May 23, from 12:40-2:00 pm in Fellowship Hall (lunch: $4/individual, $10/family).

Update on Liberia team

Who would have thought that a volcano erupting in Iceland would impact our team in Liberia? But it did! Airports in Europe have been shut down due to volcanic ash, preventing our team from leaving Liberia last night and flying through Brussels to JFK.

The good news is that they were able to get rerouted flights through Morocco. They now fly out of Liberia today and should be back in the US by tomorrow. :)

Wedding Report

The wedding of the century (C. Everett Koop and Cora Hogue) went as expected - beautiful, elegant, honoring to the Lord. We did have webcast troubles. However, the ceremony was video taped and will be posted. Stay tuned for an announcement as to when it is available.

A more serious matter will have to be raised at the next Session meeting, namely the length of kissing between newly weds. My, my, my... I've given shorter pastoral prayers than what followed "You may now kiss your bride"! We might have to edit that portion of the video.

Short-term Trip Training May 2

All Tenth members or regular attenders planning on participating in a short-term trip this year are warmly invited/required to attend a short-term trip training session on Sunday, May 2, from 12:45-3:00 pm in 315 3Rear. Lunch will be provided for a small fee.
