Sunday

He really is leaving! I walked into Phil's office this morning and it is empty! No books on the shelves, no clutter on the mantel (he really did have a cluttered mantel). Movers are coming to the house today. It is going to be a tough day Sunday.

And that's okay. I am thankful for a religion that allows sadness. Phil's, and his family's, departure reminds us that the work of God's kingdom has its personal cost. We do not have to pretend that it doesn't. And, indeed, the costs make the work all that more dear. We cannot speak of sacrificial service to God that leaves out sacrificing what actually hurts to sacrifice. Nor may we leave out whatever it is we do not understand. God gives his orders and carries out his purpose - some of which we understand and some we do not.

It is okay to be sad on Sunday for our loss, but all the more then we are to demonstrate to one another and to witnesses what it is to nevertheless trust our God to know what he is doing and to act for our good. And thus we must worship our Lord to our fullest. We know that our Senior Minister will point us to Christ and to the unfailing love of God that we have in Christ. Even now be meditating upon the passage he will preach - Romans 8: 38-39: "For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord."

OWEN: When we were missionaries in the Philippines a friend from my hometown came to adopt a boy from an orphanage in the southern part of the Philippines. I remember thinking of the incredible significance of his adoption. Owen was an orphan; he most likely came from extreme poverty, and from a Muslim background. Two loving parents, who had financial means, stability, and a strong Christian home, adopted him. The contrast and change for Owen was obvious. He received a new name and a new hope.   more

Phil was a wonderful human being. I met my husband nine years ago. Phil was my first true friend and mentor. Everyone who knew Phil – knew that he was someone they could talk to. Phil was a very confidential person – you couldn’t get a thing out of him. Phil would do anything for you, he was a person who just loved people, and this was a gift that the Lord gave him. Phil talked the talk and walked the walk. He was an example to all of us here at Tenth and let us all remember that. Phil loved his mother, brothers, sisters, children, and grandchildren, and, oh, how I will always remember his beautiful smile.

Grace and Peace

Grace and Peace Community Church, Tenth's daughter church plant work in S. Philly is moving along. Indeed, this is Jonathan Olsen's last week with us. Next week he stays full time at his office just south of Washington Avenue. The group has been meeting already on Sunday evenings. Beginning July 11 they will quietly start services in the morning. You may be eager to visit them for encouragement. Wait, however, until the fall. They have limited space and want to save as much room as possible for visitors in the community. Keep the mission church in your prayers as they continue to move forward.

Housing Needed for Hospital Treatment

A ruling elder at a PCA church in Ashville, NC needs housing from August 23-October 31 as he receives six weeks of treatment at University of Pennsylvania Hospital. If you can provide for this need, please contact Charles Andrews at candrews@e-steele.com.

Sunday Strategy

If I had a choice, which I don't, I would attend the 9:00 service. It's my guess that the 11:00 will be overflowing. I'd then attend the Tenth International Fellowship service at 11:00 in Fellowship Hall and come back to the sanctuary for the ceremony. Well, actually, I'd more likely go to the Catacombs where it is cooler and get a close up view on the TV's, then run up the stairs and get first in line for the cookies and lemonade.

The Final Week

Well, we have come to the final week of Phil Ryken's tenure at Tenth. Here again are the means of public farewell you may still participate in.

1. Attend Sunday's morning service at either the 9:00 or 11:00 service. After the 11:00 service (about 12:15), we will hold a brief commissioning ceremony and present him and Lisa with their gift. They will then remain in front of the pulpit area to greet everyone. I anticipate a long line and suggest you head out to the portico and avail yourself of cookies and lemonade to sustain you.

2. Somewhere, (I don't where yet) we will have a table with paper so that you can write notes to be put in their memory book, or you can bring cards with you.
