Two weeks and counting

In just a fortnight, Tenth will kickoff its 2012 Global Outreach Conference: Costly Christianity. Drs. Patrick Sookhdeo and Christopher Wright will be our special guests as we consider why God uses suffering to grow his church. We have an packed week of activities planned including a seminar on how to use your business expertise to serve the global church, fieldtrips to help you understand other religions, and a festive international banquet. The full brochure will be in bulletins tomorrow but you can get a sneak peak at the brochure, and peruse all the conference details here.

New Growth Press

Are you looking for practical books that address specific problems and issues that you are facing? Check out this book publishing resource - New Growth Press. Many of the writers are local from CCEP and Harvest USA, for example. In particular, look at the mini-books section which address very specific issues.

David White, who has spoken at Tenth, has a new book, Sexual Sanity for Men, published here.

Cone Duty: Scott Wants You!

From my new hero, Scott Moore, who has taken over coordinating the street cones detail:

In order to ease the scheduling of cone placement I have made a spreadsheet available via this link. If you are interested in helping, you can add yourself to the schedule or email me.

We still need one volunteer for this Sunday evening ZONE 4 pickup.

I have posted the current zone maps to the web. They are available at the following link location and will be updated as we acquire higher quality images.

First Bible Dedication

The two distinguished men in the picture are Tenth member Steve Fisher and Westminster Seminary president Peter Lillback. They were at today's dedication of the Official State Historical Marker commemorating America's First Bible by colonial printer, Robert Aitken.

Summer Camp

Phil Ryken sent me a notice that he is speaking at Camp of the Woods in New York this summer, July 20-27. Click here for info about the camp. I see that they have a different sports emphasis each week. I can't believe that baseball emphasis is the week after Phil speaks. Perhaps that was so he would keep his attention to his speaking duties.

Presidential Theatre

Our friends at Players & Players Theatre across the street on Delancey have an upcoming event The American Presidency; A Theatrical Response.  You can find out more about the event here which also presents their full season offerings.

Trinity Home

Amy Carpenter has a 2 bedroom, one bath trinity-style home for sale in the Queen Village section of the City.  A really nice feature is a private courtyard entrance and being away from the street sounds.  There are open houses set for this Sunday from 12 to 1pm and next Sunday from 1:30 to 2:30pm.  See the link here for pictures, how to get a private showing, and more details.

The Preaching President

The keynote speaker for Westminster Seminary's annual preaching conference October 23-24 is...well now just who is it? Oh yes, it's the guy that used to be on staff here a long time ago - Phil Ryken. For more information, check out Westminster's site.

Screwtape Visits Philadelphia

Max McLean brings The Screwtape Letters to Philadelphia this weekend at the Merriam Theater. First showing is tonight. Click here for info and tickets. To get a taste of the show, check out the video.

Be Assured

Proverbs 11:21

Be assured, an evil person will not go unpunished,
but the offspring of the righteous will be delivered.

While watching a sporting event, such as a basketball or football game, you will usually notice a coach get extremely angry, sometimes for no apparent reason. He screams at the officials. His assistants may have to hold him back. Why is he so angry? He sees what he perceives to be cheating by the other team; that's bad enough; but what pushes him over the edge is that he can't get the officials to see the cheating and punish it. "They are getting away with it!" Read more »

God's Delight

Proverbs 11:20

Those of crooked heart are an abomination to the Lord,
but those of blameless ways are his delight.

Meditate on what pleases God:

His delight is not in the strength of the horse,
nor his pleasure in the legs of a man,
but the Lord takes pleasure in those who fear him,
in those who hope in his steadfast love
(Psalm 147:10-11). Read more »

Keeping Steadfast

Proverbs 11:19

Whoever is steadfast in righteousness will live,
but he who pursues evil will die.

One half of this proverb seems easy enough to fulfill, while the other half is impossible. Most people claim that they do not pursue evil, but who claims to be steadfast in righteousness? No one is perfect.  Read more »

Brush Up on Your Reformers

With the Reformation Hymn Festival just over two weeks away (Oct. 28), the church library has set up a small display of books about Reformers and the Reformation Theology from our collection. We have Fiction, Biography and Theological selections to suit all ages. (Ok, at the children’s level it’s mostly fiction or biography but the theology of the event is woven into it.) Come check the books out in the church library in the Catacombs Sundays between 10:30 and 11:00 am.

Thanks,
Sylvia Duggan

A Sure Reward

Proverbs 11:18

The wicked earns deceptive wages,
but one who sows righteousness gets a sure reward.

This proverb is a commentary on the previous proverb: "A gracious woman gets honor, and violent men get riches." The "riches" that the wicked earn are deceptive. They are but the precursor to disaster and misery, be it in this lifetime or the next. The honor that the righteous receive are a sure reward because it is the honor bestowed by God. Read more »

Neighborly Shiatsu

Many of you know our neighbor across Delancey Street, Bill Melton. He is the friendly guy sitting outside, oftentimes with his two dogs Madison and Yoda. I regard him as Mr. Neighbor. I've never met such a friendly neighbor, as all of the church staff will attest. One staff member attests to the effectiveness of his new personal business - shiatsu, a form of Japanese massage. Bill can provide shiatsu at his home or will travel. If you are interested, he can be emailed or called, 267.701.6253. Tell him I sent you.

Helping Our Homeless Neighbors

Have you ever come across a homeless individual and felt totally uncomfortable? You see them and you know they are in need, but you are not sure what to do. You know you should not give money. But, you see clearly that they have some needs. Their lips are chapped. They are hungry. They are thirsty. They are asking for help.

How can you help? Here is a simple idea - blessing bags. And don't forget to include invitations to Fellowship Bible Study and Community Dinner (click here for them).

Sparrows Needs your Help!

Girls ages 5 through 6th grade, Sparrows needs your help!  We had great fun at the October 13 event, but we still need to create more crafts to have enough gifts to give to the residents in the nursing homes.  Sunday October 21 and 28 from 10:30 - 11am (between services), we will be having a Sparrows "make-up" craft time for those that were not able to attend last Saturday.  Please come to a classroom in the Catacombs after Sunday school to help make one of the gifts.  Thank you for your time and service!  Hope to see you Sunday....

Personal Benefits

Proverbs 11:17

A man who is kind benefits himself,
but a cruel man hurts himself.

What typically happens when you do a kind deed? You hold the elevator door open instead of letting it close on the person walking to it; you let the driver pull in front of you in heavy traffic; you help your colleague complete a task, carry the bag for your neighbor. Usually such kind deeds earn a smile and a thank you. What happens to you then? You smile and feel happy. Your kindness benefits you with well-being. Your day becomes more enjoyable; you feel contented; and all because of being kind.
