More Liam

Remember the recent picture of Liam in the cowboy hat? He did more in Wyoming than ride horses; he was speaking as part of the Missions Conference of College Heights Church where he delivered three sermons. If you'd like to hear them, you can access them here. You can also hear a recent chapel talk he gave on temptation at Westminster Seminary here.

Healthy Practices

Proverbs 15:30

The light of the eyes rejoices the heart,
and good news refreshes the bones.

This proverb gives two practices that make for good health. The first is a cheerful look. We speak of the "gleam in the eye." It is the look that expresses happiness, approval, love, fun. It is the look of approval that the young student hopes for in the teacher as she looks over his essay, or that the child hopes for in his parents’ eyes as they read the card he made. It is the loving look a couple gives to one another that assures each other of secure love. It is that brightening of the eyes of your friend or loved one, because you came into sight. Or perhaps it is the look of forgiveness and reconciliation after a period of tension. Cheerful looks – bright eyes – produce good effects on the heart.

A Distant God?

Proverbs 15:29

The Lord is far from the wicked,
but he hears the prayer of the righteous.

"Why won't God answer my prayer?"
"Why won't God listen to me?"
"Why is God so distant?"

The Liam Monologues, Part 2

In part 2, Liam talks about influences on his early theological development and the great preachers who whetted his appetite.

In Need of a Guitar Instructor?

I am an artist diploma student in guitar at the Curtis Institute of Music and I am currently searching for more students to teach.  I live in West Philly and have easy access to both Center City and the suburbs.  I can teach at Curtis or travel to your location.  I have been teaching privately since 2007 and have taught students ranging in age from 6 to 60 years old.  I have experience teaching both classical and popular styles of guitar. If interested, please contact me by email.

Housing need

One of our global partners has requested help in finding housing from early July to mid-October for his family of four. If you know of a furnished house or apartment that might be available during that time, please contact us.

Free Sproul on Kindle

Erin Millar has made me aware of free RC Sproul publications for free on Kindle right now. They are all part of a Crucial Questions series.  Here is one example.

Righteous Pondering

Proverbs 15:28

The heart of the righteous ponders how to answer,
but the mouth of the wicked pours out evil things.

Note the contrast between the heart of the righteous and the mouth of the wicked. Jesus says that it is out of the heart that evil things pour out. Evil pours out of a heart filled with evil. Evil pours out also because the unrighteous heart fails to check itself. It simply acts naturally, which is very easy to do in our society that teaches the principle, trust your heart above all else.

The Liam Monologues, Part 1

Westminster Seminary has posted a series of five-minute clips of Liam conversing about a variety of topics--conversing because there really was someone there asking him questions. That interlocutor has been edited out leaving us Liam unadulterated. We'll post them one a day. In this one he talks about how preaching in the US is different than in the UK.

Praying for Oklahoma

Please commit yourself to prayer throughout this day for the victims, families, and friends in Oklahoma suffering from yesterday's tornado. Pray, keeping in mind, that the weather conditions producing that tornado still continues and more tornadoes are expected.

Of Greed

Proverbs 15:27

Whoever is greedy for unjust gain troubles his own household,
but he who hates bribes will live.

It is bad enough to be greedy. Such a person cannot be satisfied with having his needs met, and he is always discontent, wanting to have more. But to be greedy for unjust gain magnifies his own troubles and the troubles he creates for his household.

The City School

"Greater things are yet to come
Greater things are still to be done in this city."

Please join us in celebrating the announcement of Spruce Hill/CCA's new name: The City School.

The decision to change our school name came after a season of prayerful consideration. Since our merger in 2006, we have been serving as one school with two names. This was always intended as a temporary measure. Prayerfully, we waited for the right name to unify our campuses.

Gracious Words

Proverbs 15:26

The thoughts of the wicked are an abomination to the Lord,
but gracious words are pure.

The thoughts, the words, and the deeds of the wicked are detestable to God. However witty they may consider themselves, however clever and fashionable they may seem to themselves, even how right they believe they may be, their behavior is odorous to God who will not be mocked. The great illusion of the wicked is that they believe they are getting away with their schemes. "There is no god," they say to themselves as fools. Pray now that they will learn the reality and power of God while there is time to be saved. Pray for your neighbors, family, and colleagues who reject Christ.
